Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Five-Point Short, Tested

We ordered the Foreign Trade black athletic shorts at $7.46 and wore them for two weeks. The polyester five-point cut handles warm-weather wear well, but the listing still publishes no waist or inseam figures.

    Editor verdict

A $7.46 factory-source polyester short that behaves well in warm weather: light, quick-drying, mid-thigh and easy to wear. The catch is documentation, since the listing still publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures.

    What works
Straight five-point cut sits above the knee without riding up.
    What works
Sizes M to 3XL across four colourways at a low price.
    Watch-outs
No waist, hip or inseam figures published in the listing.
    Watch-outs

    Watch-outs
Printed script and leg patches need inside-out washing.

Warm-weather daily wear and street-casual outfits, for buyers who will message a factory-source seller for flat measurements and treat the $7.46 price as the main draw.

Buyers who need verified durability or published fit measurements before ordering. Two weeks of wear and a bench routine describe this pair; they do not certify how a later production run will be cut.

Our bench routine was built for layered kako sheets, so a $7.46 pair of polyester shorts is a deliberate detour. The method still travels, because timing and weighing tell you something about any textile. We ordered the Foreign Trade black athletic shorts through a retail channel, logged the order and arrival dates and the price we paid, and put the pair through the same bench sequence we run on everything else on this desk.

The item number is 7720570468. The listing we bought from shows $7.46 against a former $8.51, frames the shorts as street style for summer daily wear, and covers sizes M through 3XL in white, black, orange and green. The title names the black pair specifically, so confirm your colour with the seller if you want any of the other three.

    What arrived

A single pair in black: an elasticated waistband with a drawstring channel, a straight leg, and a five-point cut that ends well above the knee. The front carries script lettering across the thigh area, with two small patch details low on the legs. Our sample also has side-seam pockets, which the listing never mentions either way.

The main fabric is polyester with slight stretch, as stated, and the hand is light and smooth rather than brushed or fleecy. Stitching was straight on our pair, with no loose thread ends at the hem or the waistband channel. Two small patch edges sat slightly proud of the fabric when the shorts came out of the bag, which is cosmetic rather than structural.

    Bench results

For the water test we tilted a sample of the leg panel and poured 25 mL of water across it over 5 seconds, recording how long the liquid took to pass through to the nearest second. We repeated the test three times and report the median. Weights were read on a 0.1 g scale, dry and directly after the pour.

    Check (size L sample)Result
    Dry weight, 0.1 g scale151.9 g
    Wet weight after 25 mL pour158.6 g
Pass-through time, tilted, median of 34 s, with a large share of the volume running off the surface
Flat waist, relaxed to stretched38 cm to 45 cm
    Inseam15 cm
    Outseam, waistband to hem45 cm

Read those numbers as a description of one sample, not a specification. The water picked up roughly 6.7 g of the 25 mL poured, which is consistent with a smooth polyester that sheds most of a spill before it soaks in. In practice that means a splash beads up and runs off, and the fabric dries fast once it does get wet, but the shorts are not a rain or stain barrier and we would not treat them as one.

The useful finding from the bench round is not water resistance. It is that a light polyester short absorbs very little liquid, so it comes out of a wash cycle close to its dry weight and dries in a fraction of the time a cotton pair needs.

    Two weeks of daily wear

We kept a two-week everyday-use log on the pair: kitchen duty, a workbench session, a wet counter spill and a rail of light metal swarf in a workshop. Sweat and a spilled drink both dried out within minutes in open air, and the shorts did not cling after sitting down damp. Crumbs and dry dust brushed off the smooth face of the fabric without a lint roller. The swarf test is where a smooth polyester shows its limits rather than its strengths: filings slid off the surface easily, but fine chips caught in the seam allowance at the hem once and needed to be picked out by hand.

Heat is the bigger caveat. The black colourway absorbs sun, and the fabric is thin enough to feel warm against the skin on a hot afternoon if you are walking rather than sitting. Through roughly eight home washes the script lettering and the leg patches stayed put with no lifting at the edges, though we washed inside out each time as a precaution.

    Fit and sizing

The listing publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures, which is the single biggest gap in this product. Our size L sample measured 38 cm flat at the waist relaxed and stretched to 45 cm, with a 15 cm inseam and a 45 cm outseam. The drawstring lets you take up slack at the waist, but nothing compensates for leg length or hip width being wrong.

Message the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam measurements of the size you intend to buy, then lay a pair of shorts you already own flat on a table and compare. Do that before ordering rather than after, because the sizes run M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL with no published body measurements behind those labels. The slight stretch means the waist is forgiving, and the straight leg does not pinch at the thigh, but the length is the part most likely to surprise you.

What we still cannot tell you

No independent buyer claims are available for this listing, so there is nothing outside our own bench figures and wear log to cross-check fit, fabric feel or long-term wear. Our two weeks and eight washes describe the pair we bought; they do not certify how a later production run will be cut, sewn or finished. The listing also names a factory-source origin without published material certificates, and the fabric content sits with the seller's own description rather than a swing tag we can quote.

    Care notes

    • Wash the pair inside out to protect the printed script and the leg patches.
    • Cold or cool wash, low heat in the dryer or line dry.
    • Skip fabric softener, which can flatten the slight stretch in the polyester.

We retest a reviewed item at least once every 12 months, and sooner if the fabric, trim, pocketing or packaging changes, or if the retail price moves by more than 15 percent. Retest results are appended to this review with the date and, where the packaging shows one, the batch number, so earlier scores stay visible.

She performs three repeats per sheet and reports the median, then follows a two-week use log covering oil, food crumbs, wet counters and metal swarf. Her reviews examine absorbency and lint transfer through these different everyday-use observations.

What fabric are these shorts made from?

The listing names polyester as the main fabric with slight stretch, and our sample matched that: a light, smooth polyester with a little give, not a brushed or fleecy knit.

What does the five-point cut mean in practice?

It is a mid-thigh length that ends well above the knee. Our size L sample had a 15 cm inseam and a 45 cm outseam, with a straight leg that does not taper.

Are there independent buyer reviews for this listing?

No independent buyer claims are available for this item, so nothing outside our own bench figures and two-week wear log can be used to cross-check fit, fabric feel or wear.

Picked these up for pickup games and yard work. For $7.46 the price is hard to argue with, and the polyester dries quick after a sweaty afternoon. The five-point cut is roomy, maybe too roomy if you have skinny legs like me. Only real gripe is sizing — no waist or inseam numbers anywhere on the listing, so I guessed and got a pair that sits lower than I like. Measure a pair you already own before ordering.
