A very cheap loose polyester short that sheds liquid rather than soaking it, survived three 30 °C washes and two weeks of daily wear. The unresolved printed-versus-solid listing description is the one thing holding it back.

- Hydrophobic polyester: 25 mL beaded and ran off the tilted swatch with no pass-through inside 60 seconds

- Drawstring gave roughly 6 cm of measured take-up at the waist on the pair we ordered

- $5.22 buys seven sizes, three colourways and a print that showed no change after three washes

- Low-rise waist with no belt loops leaves nothing to hold a structured fit

- No independent buyer feedback exists, so everything beyond our two weeks is unverified
Warm-weather casual and light sport wearers who want a loose, low-rise short with an adjustable drawstring, are willing to confirm the pattern with the seller, and treat a $5.22 pair as a seasonal extra, not a long-term staple.
Shoppers who need a belted or structured waistband, a fitted cut, published flat measurements or independent buyer reviews. Also skip if the printed-versus-solid question must be settled before you order.
Einordnung
We ordered the green pair of these Celine-printed shorts through an ordinary retail channel, logged the order date and the arrival date, and put them through the same bench routine we run on everything else on this desk. At $5.22 against a $5.96 reference price, this is one of the cheapest items we have had on the bench, so the question was less about luxury finish and more about whether a polyester short at this price holds its shape, its colour and its printed surface for a whole summer.
What arrived
The pair we received is a loose, straight-leg short in a polyester plain weave, cut with a low-rise waist and closed by a flat drawstring rather than a belt. The inner waistband is solid green, the cord matches, and the light-coloured repeating motif runs uninterrupted across the body panels. On our pair the pattern lines up reasonably well at the side seam, with one small step where the panel joins. There is no belt loop, no fly hardware and no visible lining. Thickness reads as standard rather than papery, and the fabric has the slight two-way give the listing describes.
The 25 mL tilt test on a polyester short
Our standard bench step pours 25 mL of liquid onto a tilted sample over five seconds, times any pass-through to the nearest second, and weighs the run-off and the wet sample on a 0.1 g scale. We repeated it three times on a swatch trimmed from the inner hem allowance of the green pair and report the median.
Across all three runs the liquid beaded on contact and travelled to the low edge instead of soaking in. There was no measurable pass-through within 60 seconds on any run, and after blotting the swatch gained a median 0.4 g, nearly all of it held in the seam channel and the folded waistband edge rather than in the body of the cloth. We read that as the practical version of the listing's stain-resistant claim: a splash sits on the surface long enough to be blotted, which is exactly what you want from a short you wear around food, workbenches and wet counters. It is not a waterproofing claim and we are not making one — the sample is one pair and the test says nothing about how the weave behaves after a season of abrasion.
Three washes at 30 °C
We machine washed the pair three times at 30 °C with a normal detergent and line-dried each time. The green body colour and the light motif showed no visible change to the eye, no pilling appeared at the crotch or hem, and the drawstring eyelet area did not fray. The wrinkle-free description held up better than we expected: pulled from the rack and hung, the shorts were wearable without an iron.
Two weeks in daily rotation
Our everyday-use log runs for two weeks and deliberately includes the messes this desk cares about: oil, crumbs, wet counters and metal swarf. Cooking oil droplets sat on the surface and blotted away, leaving no ring once washed. Crumbs brushed off without working into the weave. A wet counter left no tide mark. Fine metal filings from a workshop drawer also brushed out cleanly, though we did pick up two small surface snags on the hem edge after dragging the shorts across a drawer lip — normal for a woven polyester and not a failure, but worth knowing if you plan to wear these in a shop.
Fit, rise and what the drawstring actually does
The waist is genuinely low-rise, sitting on the hip bone rather than at the natural waist, and the drawstring is the only thing holding it. Measured at the waistband on the pair we ordered, the cord took up roughly 6 cm of circumference before the fabric started to gather awkwardly. That is useful adjustment, but it is not structure. The listing publishes no flat waist or hip measurements and allows a 1–2 cm tolerance, so we would still ask the seller for the flat numbers on the size you intend to buy, especially at 4XL and 5XL where the pattern panel often scales unevenly.
The print question, still open
The one issue that survived our testing unchanged is the description conflict. The listing title and imagery describe an all-over printed motif, while the listing's own pattern field says solid colour. Those two statements cannot both be right, and our pair — the green — arrived printed.
The listing pattern field says solid color while the title says all-over print — the two descriptions do not match.
If the printed surface is the reason you are buying, get photographs of the exact variant and size you intend to order before you commit. The same caution applies to the apricot and black colourways, which the listing presents with the same all-over motif.

What $5.22 buys here
At this price the shorts are not competing on finish; they are competing on whether the basic claims survive contact with a real week. On our bench the fabric claims held: liquid shed rather than soaked, the print survived three washes, and the shape stayed loose and straight. What the price does not buy is structure, published measurements or any independent confirmation, and it does not buy a settled answer on whether the shorts are printed or solid.
What we could not confirm
- No independent buyer feedback exists for this listing, so everything we did not test ourselves rests on catalogue material alone.
- Fibre content comes from the listing and our sense of the hand-feel, not from a laboratory test.
- Two weeks is not a season: abrasion at the crotch, elastic recovery in the waistband and long-term colour retention beyond three washes are all still open.
We retest every item on this desk at least once every twelve months, or sooner if the fabric, the print method or the price moves by more than 15 percent. If you own these and see a failure we did not, send dated photographs and the batch details and we will open a retest.
Do these shorts feel cool enough for humid weather?
Polyester is not a cooling fibre, but the loose straight leg moves air and our swatch shed liquid instead of holding it. We were comfortable in a Dutch summer; in deep humidity we would expect some clamminess against the skin.
How should I dry them after a wash?
We machine washed at 30 °C and line-dried indoors; the pair was wearable again in roughly 40 minutes on an indoor rack. The listing does not mention tumble drying, so we kept ours out of the dryer.
Do the apricot and black colourways fit like the green pair?
The listing gives one loose, low-rise drawstring cut across all three colourways and seven sizes, so the shape should carry over. We only ordered the green, and neither the pattern nor the colour was confirmed in the listing text.
